Welcome to a special sensory-friendly movie event for neurodivergent adults and support professionals at Coos Bay Public Library! We're excited to invite you to join us for a cozy and inclusive experience watching Bumblebee (2018). Here's some background info to help you feel comfortable and excited about the event:

Getting Ready for the Movie:

  1. What to Bring: Bring yourself, your favorite fidget toys, and any special snacks you enjoy.  (We will be providing popcorn and soda!)  If you have noise-canceling headphones, feel free to bring those too.
  2. Comfortable Seating: Attendees are welcome to stand or sit on our chairs or on the floor.  If you have a preferred type of seating, like a bean bag, please bring it with you!  Seating can be positioned wherever in the room feels right for you.
  3. Dim Lights: The lights in the room will be dimmed to reduce screen contrast and create a cozy atmosphere.
  4. Popcorn and Drinks: Enjoy free popcorn and refreshing cold drinks while watching the movie.  If you prefer specific tastes, textures, or temperatures, feel free to bring your favorite snacks or drinks to enjoy!
  5. When to Arrive:  We’ll begin the movie at 2:00pm, but feel free to show up as early as 1:45pm if you need to set up special seating or make other arrangements for your comfort.

About the Movie:

  1. Bumblebee (2018): This movie features exciting adventures with some flashing lights. There are a few brief sequences of intense laser battles and flying scenes. Some shots take place at extreme heights.
  2. Subtitles: The movie will be shown with subtitles so everyone can follow along easily.

During the Movie:

  1. Stimming and Movement: Feel free to move around and stim as much as you need during the movie. It's all okay here!
  2. Volume: The volume will be set to a comfortable level, not too loud, so you can enjoy the movie without feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Take a Break: We’ll have a table set off to the side with coloring pages and color pencils if you get overstimulated and need a break.  You’re also welcome to take a break in the library and return when you’re ready.
  4. Bathrooms:  Public restroom access will be available inside the library.  Friendly staff at the circulation desk will be happy to point you in the right direction if you need help getting oriented.

After the Movie:

The movie will take up most of our two-hour slot this time, but future events will allow more time for discussion.  We’ll have around ten minutes to gather our things and move any conversations we’d like to have into the library.  Suggestions for future movies are welcome!

Remember:

  • This is a safe and inclusive space where everyone is welcome.
  • It's okay to be yourself and enjoy the movie in your own way.
  • If you need anything during the event, just let one of our friendly staff members know.

We can't wait to see you at our special movie event! Get ready for an adventure with Bumblebee and a fun time with friends.

We hope this explanation helps you feel excited and prepared for our movie event. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out to Emily at echurchcb@coosbaylibrary.org
